About Compress PDF
Last updated: October 2026
Most PDF size problems are the same problem: a 40 MB scan that has to go under a 10 MB attachment cap or a portal's upload limit. This compressor rebuilds the document at a lower resolution, letting you pick the trade-off directly - Web at 72 DPI for something that will only ever be read on a screen, Standard at 150 DPI for general use, Print at 300 DPI when it still has to hold up on paper. It is worth knowing exactly what that does, because most tools do not say: each page is rendered to an image and the rebuilt PDF contains those images. The document stays a PDF and looks the same, but text inside it stops being text - it can no longer be selected, searched or read by a screen reader. For a scan, that costs nothing, because a scan was already pixels. For a text document you need to remain searchable, this is the wrong tool and you should keep the original. Nothing is uploaded: the render and the rebuild happen in your browser, which matters for the contracts, statements and medical records that make up most of what people need to compress.
How It Works
Each page is rendered to a bitmap at your chosen DPI with pdf.js, re-encoded as JPEG at the matching quality, and placed into a new PDF with pdf-lib at the original page dimensions. Everything runs in your browser. Because the output holds rendered images, text in the result is no longer selectable - that is inherent to this kind of compression, not a limitation of this implementation.
Use Cases
- •Getting a scanned document under an email attachment limit
- •Meeting an upload cap on a government, bank or university portal
- •Shrinking a scanned contract before sending it to a client
- •Reducing a large PDF for storage without moving it to the cloud
- •Compressing a photo-heavy report that only needs to be read on screen
