About PNG to ICO Converter
Last updated: October 2026
ICO is a container that holds several sizes of the same image, which is why a proper favicon is an .ico and not a renamed PNG: the browser, the bookmark bar, the desktop shortcut and the taskbar all want different pixel sizes, and an ICO carries them together so each picks the one it needs. This converter builds that container from a single PNG, generating 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions - the three that cover essentially every use. Start from a square source with clear shapes and no fine detail; at 16 pixels anything intricate turns to mud, which is why good favicons are simple marks rather than shrunken logos. Transparency is preserved. Everything runs in your browser, so the file is not uploaded.
How It Works
The PNG is decoded in your browser and re-encoded at 16, 32 and 48 pixels, and those images are packed into a single ICO container with the alpha channel intact. It all runs on your own device.
Use Cases
- •Making a favicon.ico for a website from an existing PNG logo
- •Producing a Windows application or shortcut icon
- •Replacing a renamed PNG that a browser is ignoring
- •Generating a multi-size icon from a design export
