About GIF to MP4 Converter
Last updated: October 2026
Converting a GIF to MP4 is one of the few conversions that is close to free: GIF stores frames with a 256-colour palette and almost no inter-frame compression, while H.264 was built for exactly this, so the same animation as MP4 is routinely a tenth of the size and often looks better because it is no longer restricted to 256 colours. This is why every large platform silently converts uploaded GIFs to video behind the scenes. Do it yourself and pages load faster, uploads succeed, and the file stops being the heaviest thing on the page. The conversion runs through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly in your browser - nothing is uploaded, no watermark, no length cap. MP4 does not autoplay inline everywhere a GIF does, so if the destination specifically needs a GIF, keep the GIF.
How It Works
FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly decodes the GIF's frames and encodes them as H.264 in an MP4 container, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and there is no length or size cap beyond your device's memory.
Use Cases
- •Cutting page weight where a heavy GIF is the largest asset
- •Getting a large GIF under an upload size limit
- •Converting an animation for a platform that prefers video
- •Improving the quality of a banded or dithered GIF
