About Video to GIF Converter
Last updated: October 2026
A GIF still goes where a video will not - inline in a chat, an issue tracker, a wiki, a docs page, an email. Converting a clip is how most reaction images and bug repros get made. The trade is size: GIF has no modern video compression and is limited to 256 colours per frame, so a few seconds of footage can outweigh the video it came from by an order of magnitude. That is why the controls here are the ones that actually matter - trim to the seconds you need, drop the frame rate, and scale the width down. Those three do far more for the final size than any quality setting, and getting them right is the difference between a 2 MB GIF and a 30 MB one. Everything runs in your browser through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so the clip is never uploaded, and there is no length or file-size cap beyond what your own device can hold.
How It Works
FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly generates an optimised colour palette for your trimmed selection and encodes the GIF against it, at the frame rate and width you set. It runs entirely in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.
Use Cases
- •Making a bug repro to paste into an issue tracker
- •Turning a screen recording into an inline demo for documentation
- •Creating a reaction GIF from a clip
- •Embedding a short animation in an email or wiki that blocks video
- •Producing a looping preview for a chat message
