About GIF to PNG Converter
Last updated: October 2026
GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which is why GIFs of photographs look speckled and why gradients band into visible stripes. PNG has no such limit, so converting lifts that ceiling - though only for what comes next: the dithering already baked into the GIF's pixels is part of the image and converting cannot remove it. What you gain is a lossless file that will not degrade further, carries full transparency rather than GIF's single transparent colour, and is usually smaller for flat graphics. One thing to know: an animated GIF becomes a still PNG from its first frame, because PNG holds one image. If you want the animation in a modern format, convert to MP4 instead - it is typically a tenth of the size. Everything runs in your browser.
How It Works
The GIF's first frame is decoded in your browser, including its transparency, and written as PNG with OxiPNG compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded and there is no batch limit.
Use Cases
- •Getting a still frame out of a GIF as a lossless image
- •Converting a GIF logo or icon for software that expects PNG
- •Preparing a GIF graphic for editing without compounding its losses
- •Replacing a GIF asset where animation is not needed
