About MKV to MP4 Converter
Last updated: October 2026
MKV is a container, not a codec - it is a flexible box that can hold almost any video and audio stream, which is why it is popular for archiving and why so little consumer software will open it. Phones, smart TVs, presentation software and most editors expect MP4. Converting re-encodes the video to H.264 and the audio to AAC, the pair that plays essentially everywhere. Because the source codecs vary, this is a real re-encode rather than a repackage, so there is one generation of quality cost - unavoidable, and not visible at sensible settings. Long files are the thing to watch: MKV is often used for feature-length video, and the work happens on your own device, so a two-hour file will take a while and needs the memory to match. Nothing is uploaded, there is no length cap and no watermark.
How It Works
FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly demuxes the MKV, re-encodes the video as H.264 and the audio as AAC, and writes an MP4 container. It runs entirely in your browser, so the file is never uploaded and the only limit is your own device's memory.
Use Cases
- •Making an archived MKV playable on a phone or smart TV
- •Getting MKV footage into an editor that will not import it
- •Converting for presentation software that only takes MP4
- •Normalising a mixed video library to one container
