About MP4 to WebM Converter
Last updated: October 2026
WebM exists because H.264 is patent-encumbered and the web wanted a video format nobody has to license. It pairs VP9 video with Opus audio, and at the same visual quality a VP9 file is usually somewhere between a fifth and a third smaller than the H.264 equivalent - which is the real reason to convert, because it is bandwidth you stop paying for on every view. Every current browser plays it. The honest caveats are two. Safari's support arrived late and is still the weakest, so if a video has to play for absolutely everyone on any device, H.264 in MP4 is the safer bet and WebM is best served as an alternative source alongside it. And VP9 encoding is slow - several times slower than H.264 for the same clip - and here it runs on your own processor rather than a server, so a long or high-resolution file is a real wait. Nothing is uploaded, there is no length cap and no watermark.
How It Works
FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly decodes the MP4, re-encodes the video with libvpx as VP9 and the audio as Opus, and writes a WebM container. Quality is set by constant-quality CRF rather than a bitrate target, so the file comes out as small as that quality allows. It all runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.
Use Cases
- •Cutting the bandwidth bill on video hosted on your own site
- •Avoiding H.264 licensing in a commercial product
- •Producing a WebM source to sit alongside an MP4 fallback
- •Shrinking a background or hero video so a page loads faster
